The northernmost of the New York City boroughs, the Bronx takes its name from a Swedish explorer, who first settled this area during the time of the old Dutch colony of New Amsterdam, present-day New York.
And yes, legally, it’s called “The Bronx” and not just “Bronx”. It has gone through several periods of growth and then declines. During the middle of the 20th Century, it suffered from a decline after a boom period, to a recent revitalization. It is the most diverse area in the country, with an almost 90% chance that two people picked at random from the street in the borough would be of a different race or ethnicity.
For decades, The Bronx suffered from poverty and urban decay due to a large number of factors that converged at the same time. But starting in the 1990s, efforts began to revitalize the region, which has helped turn The Bronx around, with parks, new commercial areas, more public transit, and changes to zoning laws.
